Pilates has been around since Joseph Pilates created this method of total mind-body connection in the 1920s. Pilates focuses on breath and muscle movements to achieve better posture and strength, which will lead to a healthier and happier life.
Today, the classic Pilates method is well-known and often practiced. As a student of pilates, there is always room to grow and learn.
Pilates is now often utilized amongst professional athletes for recovery and overall core strength. Athletes love to cross-train with other types of exercise and strengthening, and this is where pilates comes in. Mostly taught on a mat, pilates can be more effective for athletes when reformers or other apparatuses are used. The most commonly used machine is the reformer, and it is often used to stretch and elongate the body and spine. Posture and correct alignment of the spine, pelvis, and hips can stabilize the body to create symmetry and optimal performance. Nowadays, you will often see professional athletes traveling not only with other trainers but a pilates instructor to stretch their muscles and build ultimate core strength through their rigorous workout regimen. Younger competitive athletes are also looking to pilates to improve athletic performance on the fields and courts.
Pilates is for everybody and every age. It can lead to less pain and tension throughout the joints and body in general. Athletes will see the most improvement in their flexibility, agility, and overall core strength.
